Dear Friends,

Three years ago when we complained to the Shady Cove council about actions of the then chief of police, we said city hall would never run us out of town as rumored had been done with others. Wrong! Our home is sold and we are leaving the area, we define it as " run out ".

We have been denied equal protection under the law, harassed, physically threatened, slandered, publicly intimidated, our privacy invaded and we have been threatened with fines of $500 per day if we did not revise twenty feet of fence that was, and continues to be within ordinance, this to punish us through harassment and cost. And all the while the city ignores a long list of nearby visible violations of law, code and ordinance on the part of city hall family, favored sons, friends and "good-ole-boys".

As response to our Constitutional right to disagree with the city through the court system, the Administrator revoked our city citizenship rights "while litigation is pending".

Threat to enter onto our property and into our home to "inspect and investigate" without a warrant, has resulted in not vacationing from our property for the past three years.

The mayor uses public facility, resources and personnel to attack, intimidate, disparage and harass those who disagree with his regime. Angered threat that we should "get a fitted bullet proof vest" exposes surety that an untimely death has crossed at least one of the defendants mind. One fearful revelation; when we attended our first council meeting, we witnessed a livid mayor loudly threaten the Thompson's; "We can take any property, any time, for any reason".

Upon our departure from city hall, a terrified Karla, who well remembers that era, said; "This is like the Hitler times". As time passed, we have both come to the solid conclusion that Karla's words could not have been truer. Should we conclude that the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms, was possibly enacted so citizens could protect themselves from out of control government officials?

Leaving is bittersweet. It is sweet for the mayor, administrator, past chief of police and public works director who have collectively managed to rid "their city" of yet more persons who expressed disagreement with city government and did not pay appropriate homage, as to a monarch and his court.

It is bitter for us because we have been compelled to sell our property and "leave town" as suggested during a council meeting, while the same city leadership harbors, employs and protects the privacy of a registered (but related) sex offender. This same offender has harassed and invaded our privacy on city time, and then openly bragged about "getting a kick out of it" while city leadership turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to complaint. Straying, threatening, unlicensed dogs are another preference for Shady residency as are persons with long "rap" sheets provided they are related to the chosen of city hall. And while the city has turned a blind eye and denies exceptionally heavy drug traffic, it searches for fly feces in the pepper of ordinances to harass political adversaries.

We are departing from the boundary of tyranny and returning to the freedom of the United States and the protection of its Constitution. Nothing within law will halt our pursuit for justice from tyranny by our Constitutionally guaranteed right to the courts.

We have gained good friends and will always have concern for them. We have also met a large number of "neutrals". We pray they don't loose their freedom by complacency. To all, know your candidates, study the issues and above all, vote. Your freedom is at stake and may be waning faster than you think.

Warmest thoughts and best wishes from;

Les Weaver and Karla Podlech

P.S.

Karla and I paid the Upper Rogue Independent to publish the previous letter in its 6-24-03 issue that will be on the stands in the upper Rogue area about 6:00 PM on 6-23-03. Of course we know that not everyone will be sad at our departure and in addition, some of those will not appreciate the light of day exposure afforded by the publishing of this letter. Notice that our letter did NOT use any publicly paid persons, public owned facilities or public resources to express our personal opinion.

For those who think the mayor was only protecting the city and therefore had the right and obligation to use your tax sponsored resources, reread his quote that I ( Les ) am just trying to " settle a personal score " . If it is personal . . . (a sudden revelation even to us) then why did he use public employed persons to harass and deprive us of rights? Poor baby is either confused or is trying to confuse you. It is a tyrannical dictatorship that uses public resources to attack his own adversaries.
