    Computer Analogies for Southern Oregonians

Computer term followed by =SOA= "Southern Oregonian analogy"

Hardware = SOA= A kitchen, with no sink, no stove, no dishes, no pots pans, no phone, no cook books. Pretty much just the room.

Computer Memory =SOA= Just like when you have a humungeous mixing bowl, you can bake a humungeous cake, but when you mix in a little bowl, best you do is get a little cake.

Processor =SOA= just like the cook, everything that counts has to go through her. (them stored groceries is like data in the computer), (processor is a very simple contraption, all it can do is add and compare and move data as per the program instructions which controls (gates) the data going through it) to accomplish tasks it must perform many, many small steps that is why faster is better. Meals get served up in a snap!

Hard Drive, CDdrive =SOA= Hey, you have just been to COSTCO, you shouldn't have to go shopping again in your life!

Software = SOA= Besides cook books, all them new fangeled intelligent appliances that make cooking a snap.

Drivers = SOA= software that allows more hardware to be hung on just like a power strip to plug in more cooking shortcut appliances.

Boot disc, Dos (disc operating system)=SOA= It is the counter space to store the cook books and all them intelligent appliances that make cooking a snap.

Windows = SOA= This would be the easy to clean floor, the stove, the refrigerator, the sink and kitchen table, the utensils, useful stuff, now we can get to cooking.

Windows Explorer =SOA= All the standard what you survive on meals, nothing fancy but healthy just good balanced meals picked up at local grocery stores.

Internet Explorer =SOA= Fancy imported, can't pronounce the name food, tastes real good, don't care if it is healthy or not, also eating out?

Outlook Express e-mail=SOA= Finding an "un-paid for" roll of postage stamps in your grocery bag. (Darn cheap mail)

The Internet =SOA= Like ODOT, roads built to the damnedest places.

Programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, Photos =SOA= Different special all you have to do is plug in meal makers. The most common of which is the microwave oven.

Folders =SOA= the top kitchen drawer, the second kitchen drawer, the third kitchen drawer, Good Lord, there's one more, the bottom kitchen drawer, places to put stuff in.

Files =SOA= All that stuff stored in the kitchen drawers.

Recognizable Files and folders ie. "My Documents" =SOA= your grocery bags and stuff you want to haul home.

Unrecognizable Files and folders =SOA= Just like stuff you stuck in a drawer and forgot why. Some of these, your kitchen would be better off without, but many you’ve got to have, like the ice cream scoop.

BEST TO LEAVE THESE ALL ALONE FOR NOW!

Desktop Icons =SOA= Here would be your index cards leading directly to your favorite recipes. Even that new Martha Stewart exotic cook book, try one, I dare you.

Toolbar =SOA= That special kitchen drawer with gadets. Many you know you should recognze but don't. You could surely cook him a up wonderful gormet meal if you knew what to do with that certain gadget.
